STONEGAZE

Your character has developed a strange and alarming ability, and is able to encase another wolf in stone with nothing but a look. A wild and unpredictable ability, Stonegaze could be useful to you and your allies, or it could cause even friends to fear you...

TIER RATING

This is a tier two ability.

STAGES

  • STAGE 1: Beginning stage

If your wolf feels threatened, afraid, or is in imminent danger, their eyes flash brightly - and turn whomever looks them in the eye to stone. In stage 1 the target remains incapacitated for no longer than a minute, but that's enough time for your wolf to make an escape! During this stage, Stonegaze can only be activated once per day and used on one target only.

  • STAGE 2: Intermediate

Acquired by completing three pieces of artwork or roleplay that relate directly to your ability
The power of the ability begins to grow, and while the user still cannot contol when the ability activates, they notice that the effects last much longer. Targets now remain locked in stone for up to five minutes. During this stage, Stonegaze can only be activated once per day, but can be used on several targets provided the user looks each one in the eye.

  • STAGE 3: Master

Acquired by completing a further three pieces of artwork or roleplay that relate directly to your ability.

With time and practice, your wolf finally learns how to control their ability, and is now able to activate Stonegaze at will. Now at its most powerful, targets of Stonegaze remain locked in stone for up to 10 minutes total. The ability can now be activated multiple times per day, and used on as many targets as desired - but be wary, for if a wolf begins to use this ability too often, their sight will become darkened and blurry for a day or so. It could be wise to heed the warning that your ability is trying to give you.

OVERALL RESTRICTIONS

This ability is completely passive in stages 1 and 2, and will activate if the character feels threatened, is afraid, or is in imminent danger from attack. In stage 3, the character is finally able to control the ability and activate it at will.

When the ability is in use, the eyes of the user will glow. The colour of the glow should be appropriate to the eye colour of the user. The eyes do not change colour.

The user must direct have eye contact with the target in order for the ability to take effect. This means blind wolves are immune to Stonegaze, and similarly, blind wolves cannot use this ability.

Targets who meet the eyes of Stonegaze do not turn from flesh to stone fully - rather they are magically incapsulated within stone. During this period of incapacitation, the target is temporarily indestructible. While encased in stone, characters have no awareness of what is happening around them. When the effects of the ability begin to wane, the stone will crack, chip and fall away.

While being targeted by this ability does not leave a wolf in any immediate danger, when they are released they will be severely disorientated and incredibly weakened, usually to the point of collapse. It takes several minutes for a victim to regain their senses, and for several days afterwards will have aching muscles, as though they've been tensed up for a long time.

This ability is thought to be self destructive. Excessive and deliberate use of Stonegaze could cause permanent blindness for the user, and therefore removing the eye contact necessary to activate the ability, leaving the wolf powerless once more. Blindness as a result of overuse cannot be reversed, not even by a shaman or by cleansing.
