obliviate
Your character has earned the devastating ability to wipe memories from minds - be it their own, or someone else’s. As their power grows, they can focus in on particular memories, erasing whatever they wish to forget, or wish others to forget. This ability could certainly be dangerous in the wrong hands.
TIER RATING
This is a tier two ability.
STAGES

-
STAGE 1: Beginning stage
The ability manifests in a strange way - at first, the user will notice a sudden increase in other wolves not recalling the last time they met. This is because the ability, while passive and uncontrolled, is erasing the most recent memory of each wolf with whom they come into contact.
-
STAGE 2: Intermediate
Acquired by completing three pieces of artwork or roleplay that relate directly to your ability
By this point, the user would likely have needed to do some controlled testing to understand the extent of the ability. In this stage, you discover that you can focus on a shared memory (something which both you and the individual were witness to) and can wipe all recollection of it from their mind while retaining it in yours. In this stage it seems to only work with trivial things, like forgetting passing conversations, things they were asked to do, or meetings they were supposed to attend. It also seems to bring you great lethargy when used, and if you try to erase more than 2-3 memories in a week, the well seems to run dry.
-
STAGE 3: Master
Acquired by completing a further three pieces of artwork or roleplay that relate directly to your ability.
In addition to the above, the user can now focus on and erase memories which they were not witness to, as long as those memories had been fully recounted to the user by the individual (target) or by another individual present at the time of that same memory. The user can also force individuals to forget certain relationships, be it that of friends or enemies: though the stronger the bond, the less likely that the user will be able to erase the bond entirely. Finally, the user can now turn their ability onto their own memories - but they should be wary, for once they erase one of their own, they cannot call it back.
OVERALL RESTRICTIONS
This ability offers a great deal of control over the lives and memories of other characters. As such, you should always seek permission from other involved players prior to using this ability in game, and you should clearly communicate to them the restrictions and boundaries of the ability. Itgoes without saying that you cannot use this ability on another character without the express consent of the player.

This ability is completely passive in the first stage, and while control of it grows in stages 2 and 3, it can still be unpredictable, particularly if the wolf is generally unstable or struggles with emotional outbursts such as rage or sadness. The more mentally-sound a wolf is, the better the candidate they will be for this ability, and the successful control of it.

In practice, there is no magic word or outward sign of magic. The user simply needs to empty their mind and focus entirely on what they wish to erase, and as long as they have enough control and concentration, it will be done.
The user cannot erase memories of which they are not canonically aware - for example, if the user was not a witness to a past event, and/or another character does not tell them about a past event, the user cannot erase that past event from their memory. The user can only erase details they were aware of, so if an unreliable narrator provides an account of a memory, and misses a detail, the Obliviate will not manage to erase that particular detail.

It is thought that the more often a wolf is subjected to the powers of the Obliviate, the more at risk they become of slipping into madness, struggling to seperate truth and lie. The more an individual is exposed, the more fragmented their mind will become.Once mastered, the ability cannot be used more than 5 times on the same character, including the user themselves., without irrepairably destroying the mind and driving the target into a permanent, vegetative state.

When the ability is activated, the target will not usually forget immediately. In stage 2, the memory will usually fade within 24 hours. In stage 3, it will disappear as soon as the wolf sleeps, and the memory lost when they wake.

The ability cannot erase core, character defining memories, including but not limited to: age, name, gender.

When the ability is used on another character:
- The memories can potentially be slowly retrieved, but only if there are other characters who can rely the original memory back to the individual, and convince them that they did happen. In stages 1 and 2, the users ability is weaker, and there is more chance of retrieving a memory. Where all else fails and a memory is entirely void, new memories and bonds can always be made where appropriate or necessary.

When this ability is used on the owner:
- They cannot retrieve a memory they have forgotten, even when reminded of it by others. When used on oneself, the ability has a frightening permanence.
